I think I'm asking the same question as this post from several years ago:
I see that in 17, according to SCR#118982, SSL encryption was added but we're getting authentication error messages when we try to connect over port 587 leading me to believe that it really is SSL that is now supported and not TLS which is surprising to me because SSL was deprecated due to security issues in 2015 (see RFC 7568). Is TLS supported and I am just missing a setting somewhere or is it really limited to just SSL?

I was wrong. SSL is not supported and TLS is supported. After failing to get SSL to work, I switched back to TLS and went over my settings very carefully and it seems to be working now.
