Thick Client Default Character encoding

Is there a way to change the thick client default character encoding to Western Windows, otherwise there are little white squares that are just space takers in our XML imported documents, please see attached screen shot, for an example

The white squares seem to indicate a font issue but this could boil down to any number of resolutions depending on XML data, style sheets, browser configuration, etc.  I would suggest contacting your first line of support where they can gather all of the necessary details to assist.
