Mixed SQL Collation (OnBase & Master)

The Hyland DB Reference Guide recommends that the “… OnBase database exist as the lone database within a SQL Server instance to ensure that OnBase has a consistent pool of memory and CPU resources. This also allows instance-specific settings to be configured for OnBase without impacting other user databases.”

I have a Hyland partner inquiring about installing the OnBase DB within a SQL Server instance running other (non-OnBase DBs). Specifically they wish to know if OnBase requires the SQL Server (i.e. Master DB) utilize the same collation as the OnBase DB. The statement within the DB Reference Guide however suggests this may be a bad practice. Opinions?

Hi Kevin,

There isn't any OnBase functionality that requires that the system databases (Master, TempDB, etc.) are the same collation as the OnBase database.

Our recommendation that the OnBase database be the lone user database on an instance is primarily based on resource utilization - allowing the OnBase database to have dedicated resources and prevent other applications' database use from impeding the performance of the OnBase database.

Hope that helps.
