What is the difference between running onbase client directly from EXE and installing Thick client on your desktop? Which one is recommended?

OnBase client is being provided in the ThickInstaller or ThickClient folders.  In the past I've been giving user direct access to the EXE to launch OnBase Client.  Is this the proper way or should I run the msi to install Thick Client on every desktop?
