Is there any way to limit a DiskGroup volume by file count or is size the only option?
There are instances when file sizes will be very small and would like to avoid the folder count from being too high on a type of storage solution. We have experiences issues in the past with other systems when they grow beyond a certain point.
I notice there are subfolders that get generated under the volume folders. What triggers the creation of these? If this is determined by file count or a certain number of days, that would also be acceptable.

Hi Shane,
Thanks for the post.
There is no way to manage the Disk Group Volume by file count, however, there are file counters to manage the number of files in a folder already built into platter management. The folder structure for a Disk Group volume is constructed like the following:
\\Hostname\UNCShare\DiskGroup\Volume\CurrentDirectory\FileName.ext
The CurrentDirectory is the counter I mentioned. This is configured to allow up to 500 files in a directory before moving to the next folder within the volume preventing any folders from containing too many files. For instance, you might see a Disk Group Volume look like the following (this is Volume 1 of the HR Disk Group):
\\Hostname\UNCShare\HR\V1\0\ (0 - 500)
\\Hostname\UNCShare\HR\V1\1\ (501 - 1000)
\\Hostname\UNCShare\HR\V1\2\ (1001 - 1500)
Hope this helps.
