DiskGroup Fileserver: InPlace Windows Server update

Our customer has a file server where both PROD and TEST DiskGroups have been configured on it. For Q1 2023 Windows Server InPlace Updates are planned for their server landscape which means that on the existing OnBase Server an OS / Windows Server Update will be performed directly. They were actually going to test the InPlace update of the OS for the test environment first, but the circumstance just mentioned with the file server would affect both TEST & PROD. I would think that the residual risk is negligible though, since the file server for OnBase basically only represents a UNC network share, so they could update the OnBase Application Server, Processing Server and DB Server to a new OS while leaving the file server out for now. Or are there other possible issues to consider in this planning?
Of course you could also migrate the TEST DiskGroup, which we could suggest as an alternative and would also recommend in the long term as a clean and consistent solution.

Hi @Mirco Novello ,

From an OnBase perspective, I don't believe it should matter.

Depending on the solution, it is best to separate TEST and PROD.  Therefore, upgrading the OS on one does not affect the other.  However, that depends on the customer's solution and the ability to purchase the necessary hardware.   Keep in mind that this represents a single point of failure should something happen to the server.

As I understand your scenario, the only part of the solution which is shared between both environments is the File Server.  From an OS update perspective, yes you can update the other servers running the other services (OnBase Application Server, Processing Server and DB Server) independently while leaving the file server hosting the OnBase Disk Groups until another time.  The OS's of the servers are independent from one another in most cases (outside of the OnBase software).  Any dependence would be related to the overall environment such as network requirements, domain functional levels, etc, etc.

Hope this helps.
