We are about to move our platters/image data to a new server and want to ease the burden of doing this in the future by putting the data on a DFS share (we wont be replicating unless we decide to move it). Is this supported?

Yes, DFS shares are supported. You can find more information about DFS and OnBase in this post as well as a White Paper on the design concept. There are some considerations such as file size and replication that should be considered when building out this type of solution. I would recommend working with you first line of support to discuss this solution further.
