If you are still using Document Composition for Microsoft Word (sometimes referred to as Document Composition V1, or Legacy Doc Comp), then you will need to convert your templates and begin using the new version of Document Composition by the end of 2013. See this post for more information about the retirement of Document Composition for Microsoft Word.

You can obtain the Document Composition Template Converter from your first line of support to help you with the process; however, some planning is required due to the limitations of the Converter (and you will undoubtedly want to check each template after conversion).  To get started, here are some tips for a successful conversion:

1. Obtain the Template Converter from your first line of support

2.  Before you begin:

  • Microsoft  .NET Framework 4.0 (Client Profile) must be installed on the workstation that the Template Converter will be run from.
  • Check your rights to the Document Composition Templates that need to be converted!  The Document Composition Template Converter only allows you to convert templates that you have rights to modify.

3.  Do not run the Converter more than once!  Running it multiple times creates duplicate templates.

4.  Known limitations:

  • Image fields are converted to unconfigured Placeholders. There is no equivalent in the new version of Document Composition, but in many cases the same functionality can be accomplished using Fragments.  Contact your first line of support if you need more assistance with finding a solution for Image fields during your conversion.
  • Fragments and Bookmarks are converted to Fragment Placeholders, but they will not display as being configured in the Placeholder Settings pane.  You must manually associate the correct fragment (see page 125 of the Module Reference Guide for instructions).
  • Placeholders in the header or footer sections of the template will not be converted.  These will need be manually added to the converted template.
