Want and email when a dcoument is updated

I work in a place where we use Sharepoint in a limited capacity (limited because its no a very nice product!). I am trying to assess Alfresco as a replacement but seem to be missing  a very useful feature which is get notifications when a document is updated. I have seen the site rules engine, but what we need is users to be able to set a flag on a document which says email me if it gets modified. This would also be very useful on the discussions section as well but thats not so important.
Does anyone know if there is a facilty in Alfresco or Share to do this?

Hi Steve,
I think this feature is not present.
More generally, as far as I know, currently is not possibile for a user decide if receive or not a notification. It is an administration stuff.
I hope in the future this feature will be present.

This would be achievable using a combination of "Favourites" within Share and scripted rules.

Off the top of my head…
- Create an "on update" rule that runs a script
- The script would go around all users' preferences looking for matching nodeRefs (favourite documents and folders are stored as nodeRef arrays)
- Any matches would send an e-mail

This isn't particularly scaleable, depending on how many users you've got. It also "hijacks" the favourites feature in Share, but that's not too bad.

Hi Mike,
Can you please explain step 2 in detail? My guess is you will loop through the tables to find the match.
Can you please explain which tables and columns to loop through?

This functionality would be nice, it is one missing item between the products.
and if it could by user be set to digest ( all changes once a day ) or at the time of change.

you would have more functionality then that other product.
