I think it would be quite interesting, to know some numbers about the community usage?

S.th. like total downloads/installs by year, by country, by operating system. Is that available somewhere?

I don't think that information is available.

I found some stats on sf. The numbers are not accurate (by far I think) because files linked from alfresco.com points to S3.

Mostly, I would like to know which versions are run. To tell eg. does version compatibility for 2.x matter at all?

Yes the numbers from sf will not be accurate hence my earlier reply.   

Just go for the latest version.
