Visibility of documents based on status

Hello,

I need an advice on how to reproduce the old sharepoint 2001 behaviour on document publishing. I need to le people collaborate on documents and give them a status of "archived" when the document is checked in but it should only be visible to the collaboration group. Then the document can be put to "published" state and is visible to everyone has read permission on the space. In the same way a "published" document can be put in an "archived" state to prevent it being viewed from everyone.
Basically they want to hide/publish documents without copying/moving/duplicating them. Moreover I need that the hiding/showing of the document is effective at the repository level, because users can access repository via some custom portlets, web client, webdav and cifs.

Anyone has an idea on how to accomplish this.

Thank you very much in advance.
Gianfranco.

One way would be to define actions that change the permissions of your documents.

Or if not actions, then a policy that fires when your documents change.
