trouble inviting people to site

I downloaded Alfresco Community 4.0 (tried community 5.0 and enterprise 4.2, but all had the same issue) to a virtual machine running on Windows 2008 OS.

I am having trouble inviting people to the site. Whenever I sent out the invite, the message always said the invitation was sent and there was no error, however, the emails never really got set out.

I have modified the alfresco-global.properties file and added codes like what's below for emails sent to gmail:

mail.host=smtp.gmail.com
mail.port=465
mail.username=username@gmail.com
mail.password=userpassword
mail.protocol=smtps
mail.smtps.starttls.enable=true
mail.smtps.auth=true

Any suggestions on what am I missing or is there is anything else I need to set or configure.

If not to point out the obvious but have you checked that the following is set to true in alfresco-global.properties

notification.email.siteinvite=true
