Hey there…
I'm trying to get the basic Community version up and running on a simple Windows XP box to evaluate for possible Enterprise purchase. The machine doesn't have anything else running on it, it's a simple blank vanilla Windows install.
Using the Installation Guide, I installed jdk-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe first. Then I downloaded and extracted alfresco-community-tomcat-2.0.0.zip into the C:\alfresco folder.
My first attempts to run alf_start met with JAVA_HOME and JRE_HOME not set errors. I resolved that using the sticky posts in the Installation forum. Now when I run alf_start.bat I get this…
However, when I open FireFox on this machine and go to localhost:8080 or localhost:8080/alfresco I get a blank "problem loading page" screen. I searched for log files under the alfresco directory but couldn't find any. The Logs directory under Tomcat is also empty.
I would love some suggestions on what to do next…

Have you installed the WCM package as well? I encountered a similar thing which was resolved when I installed the WCM package for my platform.
My understanding (albeit very simple) is that the WCM is used for Web access aswell as for creating web content - I maybe completely wrong though.
Can you confirm which packages you installed:
AlfrescoCommunity-2.0-Setup.exe
AlfrescoWCMCommunity-2.0-Setup.exe
