There isn't much to it: just install Alfresco as usual, ensure you don't have an existing SMB server (eg. Samba) running and start Alfresco as root (to ensure Alfresco can bind to the privileged SMB ports).

If you don't wish to run Alfresco as root, you can reconfigure Alfresco's CIFS server to use a non-standard port (see http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/File_Server_Configuration#SMB.2FCIFS_Server_Configuration), then use iptables (or whatever) to forward requests to the privileged CIFS port (port 445) to that custom port.  More details are at: http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/File_Server_Configuration#Running_SMB.2FCIFS_from_a_normal_user_accoun....

Peter

After following those steps there's nothing further required to enable Alfresco's CIFS server - it's enabled by default.

Cheers,
