Hi,
We are currently using Alfresco Community in its version 4.2.c. Few weeks ago, I was asked to add a small feature to Alfresco to receive a notification when a document is updated and if we have 'subscribed' to this document.
The first thing that came to my mind was to use the list 'My Favorites'.
What I want to do is to set up a content rule on the DMS: when a document is updated, a Java code is executed. This code will check if the document that was updated is in the list of 'My Favorites' documents of each users. If this was the case, an email is sent to the user.
In the Java API, there is an Interface 'FavouritesService' with a method 'isFavourite(userName, nodeRef)'. Unfortunately the package 'org.alfresco.service.cmr.favourites' is only available from the release 4.2.d… ;(
Is there another way to do what I want using the Java API provided by Alfresco? Or even using the Javascript API?
I think this feature to subscribe to documents is something that should be added in Alfresco! I recently downloaded an Alfresco Community Edition 4.2.e to try to dvlp this custom action but I'm facing some issues. Like I said before, I need to get the list of all users to have access to their favorites documents:
If I try to execute this part of the code, I get the following exception on the last line personService.getPeople(pattern, filter, sort, paging):
On the Share Interface, I get a message that said something like 'Read Write action on Read Only item'. I don't really understand why I get this kind of exception on a getters. I tried to execute this code as Administrator but I can't get it works. It should be really stupid but I can't find the solution… In addition, this is the only way I found to list users in Java.

your error stack trace does not match with your code example: in the code there is a call to getPeople() but in the stack trace there is a call to getAllPeople()
The problem with this kind of error is that it is most likely "just" an error triggered by a broken functionality that is being called prior to your rule. In my experience, this is most often related to malconfigured custom services (e.g. incorrectly configured security interceptors / beans).
As to your question about getting the favorites before 4.2d: The favorites are all stored within the user preferences for which the FavoriteService is "just" a facade. You can read the preference yourself via the PreferenceService. The preference keys are "org.alfresco.share.documents.favourites" and "org.alfresco.share.folders.favourites". The value of the preference should be a comma-separated list of NodeRef.
We have recently implemented a subscription feature in Alfresco Share site document libraries where users can sign up for notification about changes to content independent of their favorites or the Site activities (which may not be generated for automatic processes, workflows, CIFS / WebDAV, SharePoint…). This lets the user decide what updates he would like to receive and also allows the site manager to set up subscriptions for members of the site (members can always opt-out, but this way a manager can define important notification watches en-bulk e.g. when new users join and don't yet know where to look).
In the moment we are in the process of finalizing this commercial module so it is not yet marketed on our web site or the Alfresco addon directory. But it is available to Enterprise and Community users.

In fact, I tried to use several method to get all users(deprecated method too [getAllPeople()]) and it seems like the copy/paste doesn't work at this moment or I just copy/past the wrong exception. I used a new installation of Alfresco 4.2.e with the original alfresco.war and share.war without deploying any extension or anything else. I just put the jar in alfresco/WEB-INF/lib and that's all:
I will take a look at the PreferenceService, thanks for the advice! But the problem of getting a list of all users stay the same. If I understand what you have said, I could get all favorite documents of a user from the PreferenceService but I can't get all users that have set the current document as a favorite.

I will take a look at the PreferenceService, thanks for the advice! But the problem of getting a list of all users stay the same. If I understand what you have said, I could get all favorite documents of a user from the PreferenceService but I can't get all users that have set the current document as a favorite.
