Edit Online missing in Share

Hi Everyone,
I’m a newbie to Alfresco & Linux.
I have installed Alfresco Community v4.2.c x64 (binary installer) on Ubuntu server v12.04 (x64) and upgraded the database to MariaDB v10.0.4. I then installed the Records Management module in Alfresco Share. So far, so good!
Our small company runs Win 7 Pro (x64) with Microsoft Office 2010 and Chrome v29. I have added users and given them Collaborator rights.
My only problem is I cannot edit documents online, that option is not available (only Edit Offline, Edit Inline and Edit with Google Docs) I can open an Alfresco document directly in Microsoft Word using port 7070, but when I hit save it gives an error “Upload Failed”
My question is: should the Edit Online function be available in the Community edition of Alfresco?  I have read in one forum somewhere that it’s only available in the Enterprise edition but cannot confirm this.

I have included my Alfresco log.

Regards,
David

Hello,

Edit Online is available in Community as well once you have installed the free module alfresco-community-spp-4.2d.amp into the Repository. Keep in mind that using Edit Online requires client-side components (ActiveX / Plugins) that may not be working in specific browsers. The only browser guaranteed to work with Edit Online is Internet Explorer (32-bit). Starting with Office 2010, Firefox should also be supported. I don't know about Chrome support.

Axel

Thank you for your advice. I now have Edit Online available in Community however it is only available in Explorer, not Share. Is this correct? I thought it should be available in Share and not in Explorer? Regards, David

Hello,

"Edit Online" refers to different functions in Explorer and Share. "Edit Online" in Explorer can be provided by CIFS or WebDAV (and maybe SharePoint protocol, but am unfamiliar with this use case). "Edit Online" in Share solely uses SharePoint procotol. When you have properly installed the SharePoint procotol module, "Edit Online" should be available in Share UI for a Microsoft Office file.

Can someone help me with this?  Of the life of me, I can not figure this out.  I tried different version of browers (ie x32, ie x64, and firefox) and still cannot see the "Edit Online".  I search everything and still cannot find a solution.  I am running community version 4.2f with SP installed.

There are two addons you have to install:
https://code.google.com/p/alfresco-share-online-edition-addon/
and
http://dl.alfresco.com/release/community/4.2.f-build-00012/alfresco-community-spp-4.2.f.zip

If you have not installed before, sudo apt-get install gnome-panel (It is not necessary if you install on Desktop version)

Of course you need Libreoffice, imageMagick etc

I am using Community 5.0.a and was having the same problem.  I did not install the addon as recommended (this problem relates to MS Office, installing Libreoffice won't make this work).  I followed the basic installation instructions and all I did was the following to make it work.

Move my document from 'My Files' to the Default Web Site project.  All files in the default site work, but not in my home directory.  To prove this I moved my document back to 'My Files' and the link went away.

I assume there is a bug somewhere here that is preventing the "Edit Online" link from appearing.

Also, a note to some of the other topics that have been useless:
* Making a local registry edit will not make the "Edit Online" appear.  Changing the client will not make the server render a link (this one should be obvious)
* The link appears in all browers, it is when you "click" the link you get different behavior

Hope this helps get people pointed in the right direction.

Hi,

have you tried editing your documents online in sites? I think the Edit Online function generally is only available in the document libraries of sites in Share and not in the Repository browser. SharePoint also uses Sites and I believe the SharePoint protocol (maybe?) expects the context of a site to work properly.

Tobias

Hi All

See my solution in this thread

And yes, tested with IE11, Firefox & Chrome, with Office 2010
