Can't delete files or folders in a space due to custom type

Hi,

I have been playing around with custom content types and have finally got them working using the extension folder method (as opposed to dynamically using the data dictionary).

Now that the type is working I want to clear out the document library and start afresh. The problem is, I can no longer list the files in the folder in the document library in Share (even though I can see them if I select all documents) and I am unable to delete the folder or files in it within Explorer. The error says :-

Please correct the errors below then click OK.
Unable to delete Space due to system error: The property value is not compatible with the type defined for the property: etc….

I have tried deleting the Site and that doesn't work either.

I'm pretty sure this is because the type that is referenced against these files no longer exists in the form that existed when the files were created.

How can I just wipe these out? Also, going forward, if I'm using custom types and I want to change / remove properties etc. how do I avoid breaking existing content?

Thanks!

Rule of thumb is never to delete types or properties that once have been into production use. What you can do is to hide them in the forms configuration and then with a comment mark them as deprecated in your model file.

So in order to be able to delete documents and files that you have created with the old definitions, you most likely need to add them back.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. The problem I have now is that I have played about with these types and used a few type names etc. so I'm going to struggle to remember exactly how to restore the types. Is there a database record that I can look at?

You can probably use the node browser to see what properties and type that are set for a document

http://docs.alfresco.com/4.0/topic/com.alfresco.enterprise.doc/tasks/tuh-admin-nodebrowser.html (Explorer version of the node browser)

Thanks that's very helpful. I was hoping there would be some method like this. Apologies for my slow response - this problem turned me off Alfresco for a little while and I've been thinking about Sharepoint but I will persevere. Custom content types are a high priority requirement for my project so I need to be 100% certain that they are manageable.

Long Path Tool helped me in this situation. http://DeleteLongFile.com

I got the same problem as very annoying and with no explanation as the file names have no visible illegal characters and are not too long and not copied or deleted and found good stuff at http://pathtoodeep.com/ and also over here. Thanks
