Alfresco for a Dummy

Hi,

I have been impressed by the demos of Alfresco. However, the documentation on installing Alfresco is really hard to find and to understand.
I have a couple of questions:

1. Is it possible to install Alfresco on a web hosting account? Or is there a part of Alfresco that needs to be on my computer? I have already installed CMS such as Joomla, and I was wondering if the same deployment is possible with Alfresco.
2. What do I need to get Alfresco running on a windows xp platform?

It would be great if the documentation were more easy to access!
Thanks Alfresco!

Luis, et.al

On setting up on GoDaddy have you been successful setting up using https?  I have been trying this afternoon and it never works outside of the box.  I can use lynx on the box (Linux) and it works, but once I try to access remotely using https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8443/alfresco it never works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nevermind, I figured out the issue.

For those of you who decide to use GoDaddy dedicated server you will also need to modify your /etc/sysconfig/iptables file.  By default it does not allow port 8443 to be enabled.  I'm sure this is probably a no-brainer, but I haven't done a lot of work with tomcat for several years.

Anyway, once you have made the change you'll need to restart iptables by /etc/init.d/iptables restart

Thanks,

Bryan

Does  that mean that you are successfully running alfresco on Godaddy?   There have been several threads asking if its possible.

Yes, it has taken quite a bit of work, but it is working on a dedicated server running CentOS5.2

I'm trying to work through several other issues now to force security, but all in all it is working on goDaddy.

Thanks,

Bryan

I have Alfresco running well on a Mac locally, but need to have a demo site that I can publish for various team members offshore. I have just ordered up a new Virtual Dedicated server from GoDaddy and am trying to install Alfresco Community Edition on that server. I selected the very cheapest $30 a month RH7, and the Simple Control Panel, for reasons cited below:

I was hoping that I would not have to lease another GoDaddy server, as I already have a dedicated server at GoDaddy with Assisted Support, running several Joomla and Wordpress sites -  I have not been able to get Labs 3.2 to run.

Here is the reason, according to their responses:

Thank you for contacting Assisted Support.

We have examined the issue and it would appear that memory issues were being caused by the Alfresco application attempting to start. The issue with the Alfresco Application, is that it requires a different version of Java and Tomcat, which are currently not available through Plesk. This information is based on the research done on the site for the developer's of Alfresco.

If you would like to Install Java 1.6 this can be done, however Tomcat 6 is not available for Plesk at this time. The alternative is Sun Microsystem's GlassFish server, which can be installed on the server. You may want to contact the developers and insure that Alfresco can be deployed through GlassFish, before you request this installation.

There is a custom support fee required for these installation. . . . we will be happy to complete the installation for you.

In the meantime- any suggestions or pointers to installing Alfresco on the Godaddy virtual server ? At least I have SSH access and can get at the thing.

A  tutorial or video on the "$30 Alfresco Demo", using Godaddy Virtual Service from start to finish, would be a really big help at this point.

You can run Alfresco on a 1.5 JDK.  There's no need to go to 1.6 unless you want to.

Tomcat 6 is required by the ant build scripts, but Alfresco will run on Tomcat 5 O.K.

You can also run on Glassfish if you want.

Newbie here.
Have a godaddy vps with 512 of ram i would like to run Alfresco from.
At the advice of one of these forums i got the windows package with plesk
Understand I need to run Tomcat Bundle for Windows.
Here's the silly question…
Do i do an install to my root and access via ip?
Or do i set up an account through plesk with a domain?
I managed to set up JDK on my c drive (1.6 - maybe i have to remove and install 1.5?)
But when i got to the database settings i realized i had failed to consider this question first.
I'm a Drupal guy and so I'm comfortable with cpanel and drush/putty…windows and alfresco unfamiliar
Plunked down my $ for Alfresco DevCon in NYC though…
Would appreciate any guidance. Thank you.
