how do i increase performance of web-engine gadget ?

PaginableDocumentModelList getChildren(); method in SocialWebEngineRoot class.its returning all documents at one shot.if the number of documents are increasing the performance will be decreased. i want to make ajax call than how do i get 5 docs at a one time.how do i make this will happen.

This is not help full.Because by default implementation is ajax.so please let me know is there any other way to increase the performance of gadget loading??
