Where is the installation documentation?

Hi

I may be missing something, but I cannot find any information on the most basic thing - how to install Alfresco (Community Edition) on Windows. There is no reference or link to "installation" from the homepage, and my next choice, clicking on the menu item "Documentation", also yielded a page containing no reference to installation. My third choice, typing "installation" into the search box yielded a few Google results for newsletters, but no installation guide. Next, I downloaded the tutorial pdf, but this assumed I had already installed Alfresco.

Not put off, I went to the wiki -> documentation -> server admin guide -> server installation -> installing on ms windows -> download and install Alfresco. This page had the useful information "Having used Documentum for 10 years, everything I have read on Alfresco seems to make a lot of sense. Here I am : discovering the product, installing it and surely promoting it to my customers if it does what it says. Alfresco yours, Pascal".

None the wiser about how to install Alfresco, I have come here. Help!

Hi

Presumably you've been following the installation steps in the README.txt within the zip file?

When you say you "ran the bat file and nothing happens" do you mean the Tomcat window doesn't appear at all? Are there any log files you can post the contents of?

Also, it would be useful to describe exactly what you've done so far and what system you're trying to install on.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

| had written a long and detailed response to your post, but the forum logged me out before i could post it. I'm not going to write it again cos I'll probably get logged out again.

All I will say is look at the poll at the top of this post. Over 90% of people want  an installation guide. Something is very amiss here.

Hi

With respect, the original post and poll is over a year old now so it's very difficult to tell if people are still having problems or not. Looking at the sheer number of SourceForge downloads would indicate most people don't. Having said that, there's always room for improvement!

With regards your situation, it's very difficult/impossible to help without further details. We know people have been installing using just the readme, most with first-time success; so these setup niggles are usually pretty easy to solve with a bit more information.

Finally, if you're having problems with forum timeouts I'd recommend writing your post in Notepad then copy/pasting in - or use Firefox which saves the contents of text boxes 😉

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

please excuse my frustration, and thanks for taking the time to reply.

What I want to do is use alfresco for web content management. Obviously I'm a long way from that at the moment.

I'm not a programmer, I'm a business manager and consultant and I download and evaluate programs for clients constantly. However, I have been known to successfully rewrite code in the past, although it's not something I'm fond of doing.

Anyway, I have my desktop set up to tun as a development server and I'm already running apache, mysql via wamp on my PC.

I realise that in itself means I'm going to have to rewrite some things, maybe a lot of things.

I'm also running the latest version of jde 1.6 and the latest version of Tomcat 6. They are all working fine.

I installed tomcat 6 separately as the version in the alfresco file didn't seem to be actually doing anything.

I also have an old version of open office 1.1. I didn't upgrade it as one of the readme's said there were problems with version 2

Obviously, this means that some of the programs aren't where Alfresco expects to find them, but first of all I want to make sure I put alfresco where I need it.

IE If I want to run alfresco for web cms via my desktop server folder, so  do I still put the program in C:\alfresco or do I put it somewhere in the root folder or otherwise of the website folder?

Can I leave my working version of Tomcat where it is C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat and rewrite some files in alfresco to point to it, or should I move it somewhere else?

Also, I don't think the jre home environment variable is set correctly, but I wouldn't know where to go to correct it. (I did find one post that said how to do it, but when I followed the instructions it didn't exactly show what the post said it should show, so I was unable to make any change.)

I do feel as if I've made some progress since I last posted as I've got various different programs installed and working. I now just need to get them working with alfresco.

Thanks again for any help. Smiley Happy

Hi

Unfortunately you're creating extra work for yourself by using Tomcat 6 (which isn't officially supported by the way due to the changes made from v5.5) so I'd highly recommend getting up-and-running with the bundled version first.

Having said that, if y ou do want to go with the system you've got, you need to deploy the alfresco.war file into your Tomcat instance, i.e. its webapps folder, rather than going with the c:\alfresco structure.

To set the JAVA_HOME variable, hit Windows-E to bring up Explorer, right-click properties on "My Computer". On the Advanced tab, choose "Environment Variables" then the lower "New" button.
Variable name = JAVA_HOME
Variable value = C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_02
Note: make sure you're using the right Java path for your system.

Copy the war file to webapps, then start Tomcat.

As I said, you'd be much better off going with the bundled Tomcat v5.5 but see whether the above helps.

Thanks,
Mike

I had a feeling you'd say something like that.

The reason i loaded up Tomcat v 6 was because the bundled version with alfresco didn't seem to be doing anything, and also I couldn't find any installer for the bundled version of Tomcat.

At least with v 6 I now know what it's supposed to look like, how it installs and works etc, and that I can actually get it to work on my PC

I'll probably try setting up alfresco with both, just cos I'm a glutton for punishment.

At this stage I'd just settle for getting alfresco working in any form.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Dammit, this forum keeps logging me out after just a few minutes, and I'm not exaggerating.

I can understand you.

On my computer running an customermanagement system i´m wrote myself on TomCat 6 with MySql 5. Now I want to combine it with an document management system.

Alfresco looks as it can work (the mysql database).

But my first try (downloading the WAR Version) ends in a desaster. I wrote a Message here to run Alfresco on TomCat 6 but up to now nobody answer. Here im reading 6 isn´t supported.

The Changes - from readme.txt - to run this software with mysql seems to run. I had some tables on my db-server.

OK … Yesterday i started a second try by downloading the TomcatBundle. Now i am on the same point - Tomcat is running but alfresco throws error messages and is still offline.

I don´t know what is wrong - up to now i think i understand my work  Smiley Sad

Here the output from alfresco.log:

Hi! Many Thanks!!!!

I´m deleting all Tables from alfresco - db and the folder "c:\alfresco\alf_data" after this i´m starting alf_start.bat from "c:\alfresco" - now it is running!  Smiley Happy

Now it would be interesting how it works with TomCat 6, because running two TomCat Server is a little extreme - i think. Is here someone who can tell witch Files had to move to witch destination?

At this time i can use alfresco for practise - thanks again!

I still think a proper PDF installation guide would be a great help to everyone.
