Webdav & Windows XP

I just installed 1.0 release (Tomcat bundle) under Windows XP and I ran into difficulties to access the repository through Webdav (web / CIFS / FTP worked fine).
When I tried to configure a "network place" (I think that's the english name, in french it's called "favoris réseau"), I got an error (invalid folder) just after entering user name and password (I tried to repeat the operation, using different accounts, but with no success).
To investigate further, I installed a Java webdav client (DAV Explorer) and I managed to connect to my folder… So the problem seems to come from Windows…
Did someone have success with this configuration ? Any idea of what went wrong ?

Thanks in advance,

Jean

Hi,

What URL did you use when configuring the network place ?. Are you running WinXP with service pack 1 or 2 ?, is it XP Pro or Home ?.

Cheers

The URL I use is http://localhost:8080/alfresco/webdav/ ; it works fine with DAV explorer. I am running WinXP Pro SP2.

Hi,

Can you enable WebDAV logging by adding the following to the WEB-INF\classes\log4j.properties file :-

log4j.logger.org.alfresco.webdav.protocol=debug

Then check the alfresco.log to see if that gives any more clues, you can email me the log file if you like.

Cheers

Hi,

I activated the debug for Webdav, and here is what I get:

Still encountering problems with my local install on Windows…

The good news now: I installed a linux/tomcat bundle on a linux server, and guess what… it worked! I can connect to the webdav repository through a network place under Windows. Almost everything is working with this install: web client, CIFS, webdav - I just cannot connect to the FTP server (I'll investigate a bit more this issue).

Hi Jean,

Maybe this is a Windows firewall issue. You could try adding port 8080 in the Windows Firewall control panel, on the Exceptions tab.

Hi

How would I go about providing 'fine grained' access control  - rights/permissions for each file / folder using user groups etc.?

I have the same issue about the invalid web folder, i find this link on microsoft site:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2netwk.mspx#EGAA

Basic authentication is disabled by default on XP SP2, but i can't figure out how to activate it. And i don't know if Alfresco support some more advanced authentication.

Here is the solution, thanks to marc steinemann  :

Sometimes the Web Folder client in Windows could have been changed by
a 3rd party. Please consider following the instructions to restore the
WebDAV client to the original one.

1. Find a file called webfldrs.msi (Normally under
WINDOWSSYSTEM32webfldrs.msi - if you installed Windows XP Servicepack
1 you will find it under WINDOWSServicePackFilesi386webfldrs.msi).
E.g. C:WINNTsystem32
2. Start the installation with double-click or right-click ->
webfldrs.msi.
3. Now you have to klick on "Select reinstall mode".
* Uncheck "Repair all detected reinstall problems".
* Check "Force all files to be reinstalled, regardless of
checksum or version".
* Check "Verify that required user registry entries are
present".
* Check "Verify that required machine registry entries are
present".
* Check "Validate shortcuts".
4. 5. Press OK and REINSTALL
5. Normally no reboot is required. Now the web folder client should
have been restored as it was shipped.

I found the solution on the web, and it worked for the webdav problem with alfresco - which is actually a windows xp problem about we-dont-know-why-webfolder-corrupded-components.
