Update Process Definition without changing the ID

Dear Activiti Developers,

We are new to implement activiti engine to our system for the vendor. Would like to seek for help on changing process definition.

I understand running SetProcessDefinitionVersionCmd may force existing execution to use the updated process definition.
However, is there any way that I can update the definition without changing Process Definition ID, which means, instead of deploy the new version, I update the definition in the BYTES table, any API to handle this? Or is there any other workaround which I am not aware of?
