set permission without opening file

How can I set file permissions on a document without having to click on it and open it?

I can only find the Manage Permissions on the menu once the document has been opened.

Takes way too much time.  I'd like to set file permissions without opening the files.

At the moment it's not possible to set permissions via a pop-up dialog (if that's what you mean)… you need to actually visit the permissions page for each document and you can access it from either the document library page or the details page for a specific document. I think we'd like to provide more "inline" management capabilities in future.
