Is it possible to display the results of a search in a selectable list format?
For example, when you are navigating in the Document Library, the contents of the
current folder are displayed in a selectable list (each file/folder has a checkbox).
When you select an object, the "Seleted Items" menu is enabled, allowing the user
to perform an action on multiple items.

I would like to have this same functionality on the results of a search.

Does anyone know how this can be done?

Yes, with recent releases of Aikau this has become possible. The alfresco/search/AlfSearchResult widget now has a "showSelector" attribute that can be configured to be true. You can also use the "alfresco/documentlibrary/AlfSelectedItemsMenuBarPopup" to create a pop-up menu on an "alfresco/menus/AlfMenuBar" into which you can add your selected item actions. You should be aware though that the standard Repository Search API doesn't return the full node metadata - so depending upon what you want to do and what metadata you need to evaluate to decide whether or not to show an action menu item might be limited.
