Repository Server. How?

http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Alfresco_Repository_Architecture mentions that there is a possibility of deploying Alfresco with "Repository Server" being external to App server. However there are no pointers on how this could be achieved.

My understanding so far is that "Repository Server" would take care of "dir.root" contents as well as DB. Is my assumption correct? How can I do this? Is this a simple case of NFS-like mounting + remote DB access or is there some more "sophisticated" way of doing it?

Why do you wish to externalise the Alfresco Repository from an app server ?

The 'Repository Server' essentially refers to a standard/remotely-accessible Alfresco Repository Server, which is configured to expose one or more remote protocols. As shown in the diagram, the Alfresco Repository Server will typically be hosted on a web/app server such as Tomcat (or similar) in order to service these remote requests.

it's a normal practice to create 3-tier architectures for security reasons. So in our case that would be: Frontend server -> Alfresco App -> Alfresco Repository. In our organization it's pretty much a standard/requirement for any newly deployed system.

pardon my ignorance, but how do I configure "standard/remotely-accessible Alfresco Repository Server" ? I'm fairly new to Alfresco so certain things are not quite obvious at this point.
