But when getting to the main navigation screen with Firefox characters are not rendered properly. For example, the "é" gets translated to "é" (literally the ampersand followed by the #NNN; code).

I've got the same problem when uploading content in Alfresco v1.1.Can you explain what you are doing so we can reproduce this?
When i view the file details, i can view it by webdav, cifs, external URL, downloading and directly in the browser… Each link has correct accented characters, except for downloading, which URL has translated characters like above (alfresco/download/attach/…).

In the /alfresco/faces/jsp/wizard/new-rule/details.jsp page when selecting a condition from the drop list, the text in the button below it (coming from the set_and_add_button message string) also gets wrongly created with the ampersand# code instead of the accented characters when using a language pack.
