From the server where alfresco is installed, the ip.alfrescodemo.net is available (as well as locally) - responds to ping. If I remove the alfrescoexample.www–sandbox. sub domain entry from the URL i see the tomcat welcome page of the virtual server (expected i guess)
In the virtual server there seems to be no extra deployed web applications (should the example alfresco web application be deployed??)
Further… The work directory in the virtual tomcat instance contains $-1$alfrescoExample directories
I am guessing there is something that resolves the subdomain of the preview URL and reverse proxies to these work directories? How can I test if this is working?
I haven't attempted to re-open this JIRA, although it seems it has not been resolved properly to me. I would be interested to hear I created a web project, all lower case letters in the dns name, and it worked fine.

Which DB are you using ? Which Alfresco build number (as per startup log) ? The underlying issue (https://issues.alfresco.com/jira/browse/ETWOTWO-1022) was DB-specific and fixed for Enterprise 2.2.3. The fix was also merged into HEAD for Labs 3.2 Preview (ie. after Labs 3d).
