One document in multiple spaces

We're trying to decide how to configure security/spaces for our organization.  We want to have a repository where multiple organizations can participate and collaboration is encouraged through multiple content types.  We want to control the process of publishing content to various organizations, based on individual content and client relationships.  We were wondering if it's possible to use spaces to capture security group/roles and then copy a link of a document to multiple spaces.  Then whatever security the users have for that space controls how they can interact with the document, but if they make an edit, the document is only changed once and is applied across all spaces.

Any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I discovered the 'Paste as link' capability.  Using the paste as link guarantees that the same document is edited from multiple spaces.  However, as one would expect, the security is determined by the properties of the original document, not the link's properties.  Does anyone have a suggestion for how we could override the security to use the space where the link appears instead of the source doc?  If that means creating a new content type that acts like a link, that's fine too.  How would we go about editing the security?

Thanks for any thoughts.
