no diagram after import in Modeler

When I import a .bpmn20.xml file into the model workspace it doesn't have a process diagram.
Is this a (missing) feature or a bug?
Current workaround is to open the process in the editor and saving it.
Thanks!

Does that process has diagram information (ie there is a subelement in the xml with BpmnDiagram)?

If not, then the Modeler probably doesn't know how to draw. I've comitted a simple auto-layout algorithm to master last week, the plan is to incorporate in designer/modeler to generate those diagram XML elements if not present.

In addition to what Joram said, an image for a model in the model workspace is only generated when you save the process in the editor.
So it's not a bug but we could add support for this in a future release.
