Hi,

Metadata is stored in the database and content files in the filesystem. Index files are also in the filesystem.

For every uploaded file there are some mandatory metadata stored that is managed by the system, it is referred to as Audit data: creator, created date, modifier, modified date, last accessed date.

There is also metadata extracted from the file and stored, what data is based on the Mimetype of the file.

If you take for example a PDF then the system will kick-off a so called Metadata extractor for that mimetype. In case of
PDF files it will try and extract the following properties from the PDF:

PDF Property               Alfresco Content Model property
author                 –      cm:author
title                  –      cm:title
subject                –      cm:description
created                –      cm:created

Any other properties in the PDF will not be extracted, you can define your own extractions to extract custom metadata.
