How to Migrate Alfresco in Windows to Linux CentOS?

Hello everyone,

We are running Alfresco under:
Windows Server 2003
JBOSS with Alfresco version 1.4
MySQL5
jdk-1_5_0_09-windows-i586

We are planning this week to migrate everything to:

Linux CentOS5
Apache Tomcat 5
MySQL5

How do we start the migration?

My first attempt to mount the hard disk (alf_data) from Windows is not recognized by CentOS.
Any input is highly appreciated.

Hi,

The first thing I'd do is back everything up and then check the wiki and make sure all steps are followed.

Check http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Upgrading_to_2.1

The database schema update scripts should upgrade your database to version 2.1. If that doesn't work I would suggest upgrading to the latest stable 2.0 release first then when that works upgrade it to 2.1. Single version upgrades tend to be safer but then again 2.1 should not require that but is worth a shot.

If the upgrade to 2.0 fails that's when troubleshooting begins. The most probable cause of problems is customizations (e.g. custom model definitions) so make sure you migrate your customizations (if any) as well.

The error above keeps on saying "public-services-security-context.xml".

Hi,

Why is your public-services-security-context.xml in the extension folder on the shared classpath? If you're extending it somehow then that's not the right way to do it. If this is the public-services-security-context.xml from version 1.4 then there might be some incompatibilities there.

I have not done any config with public-services-security-context.xml. It must've been already there in extension folder before any config. If extension is not its orig location, where should this file be located?

I have moved this file from extension to other folder thinking that it might be the cause of the error but its still throwing 404 not found error.

Hi,

The basic idea is this. You should backup your database and file system content before attempting an upgrade. Every time your upgrade fails try to fix the problem and try again with a fresh copy of the backed up database and file system content. If you didn't make changes to public-services-security-context.xml then this file should not be in the extension folder. This file comes with the alfresco WAR and should remain untouched in your case.

Alfresco comes bundled with its default spring configuration and it's all inside alfresco.war. The extension folder is there for you to add extension and customization definitions to Alfresco. If you have not made any customizations at all to Alfresco then you don't need to have anything in the extension folder. That said one would usually have the definitions for dir.root and your database config in the extension folder unless you've been using the Alfresco defaults all along.

Thank you very much for the clarification. I think my config in extension folder has been mixed up since I also made config directly in alfresco.war. Do I also need to copy all my config (about 5 files) in alfresco.war of v1.4 and paste it to alfresco.war of v2.1?

I will go back to the working orig config of alfresco v2.1 running in linux and try to restore again the database and alf_data from alfresco v1.4 in windows2003. Sad thing is that this would take a while 'coz our alf_data is already 280GB and the database backup (to be restored) is almost 3GB.

Hi,

You should definitely move your custom configurations to the new Alfresco. You should also spend some time comparing the files you changed in 1.4 to 2.0 and 2.1. Things might have changed in which case overwriting entire files will most probably break it. That's why it's a best practice to only override the things you want to change in separate files in the extension folder.
