How do I deploy from Alfresco server 1 to Alfresco server 2?

Hi,

I have 2 servers - "A" and "B".  I want to be able to use the AVM functionality to deploy the STAGING area of a WCM web project on server A to a sandbox of an identically-laid-out WCM web project on server B.

I successfully set up an AVM deployment between A & B using the target "alfresco", but that stuck A's content in B's "Web Deployed" space, which doesn't help me.  I also setup a deployment using the target "avm" but I have no idea where that successful deployment sent the content.

You probably want to use the "avm" target.    Which has deployed your content to a "live" store on server2.

While there is no authoring environment for live stores, so for example you can't see it through the authoring environment of Alfresco Explorer, the content will exist and be available to support your web site.   What you need to know is that the avm store name will be <your project>-live.      You can turn off the "-live" prefix if you want, its there to help with the use case where you deploy to the same server.

Actually there is a unsupported "trick" to deploy from one authoring environment to another which is to create a web project with the same name (or <same name>-live) on server B first so you can then deploy from one authoring environment to another    But then you then have authoring artifacts like authoring permissions and sandboxes on the live server.
