Custom Fields

Hi, hope this is in the correct space.

I would like to create custom fields to filled in by users when adding a document to Alfresco, is there a way to do this?

I've read about metadata, is this what it's called and is it only available in the Records management module?

I'm using community edition 4.2c

is metadata only available in the Records management module?

No, It is applicable to all the module each and every content which is residing in alfresco.
So, if you want to add your custom properties you can do it through the link provided in above answer.
