best way to store information in Alfresco?

I need to store information in Alfresco from an external program.  What is the best way to do this?  Which method has the best performance?  WebServices?  Web Scripts?  Another method?

That depends on what information you want to store? Small bits of data? Or documents? Alfresco IS a document management, it's what it does best!

I would like to store documents and images.  Pdf and word documents, but also excel and powerpoint.  Different types of images.  Currently I'm using Alfresco Web Service and am wondering if there is a way that offers better performance.
