Alfresco not starting - missing service?

We are running version 4 of Alfresco share Community and have just virtualised the server it was installed on (Windows 2008 Standard, SP2). A third party carried this out for us.
We now cannot launch the app - there is no error message, other than the default browser message "page could not be found".
We have noticed that there is a service completely missing. From memory, it is 'Alfresco Tomcat'. When we try to start the existing 'Alfresco' service, it will not start because of a dependency service being missing (the tomcat service).

I have a feeling that if we were able to restore this 'Alfresco Tomacat' service, that everything would work again, as all the data appears to be present. I'd be grateful if anyone could give any advice on this, whether it be on how to re-instate the service or generally get things back up and running.

Many thanks,

Del.

Sorry - lots more details required before anyone can help.

Were you running alfresco on that tomcat service?

How did tomcat get removed?

What does "have just virtualised the server" mean?  And in particular how did alfresco get from the old machine to the VM?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, we were running Alfresco on the tomcat platform. The installer was 'alfresco-community-4.0.b-installer-win-x32.exe'. The 'easy' option configuration wizard was used, i.e. the default settings were used with no extra information entered other than installation location and Administration Password. All the default port no.s etc. for tomcat were taken.

I believe that the running windows services for this default windows installation should be  'alfrescoPostgreSQL' & 'alfrescoTomcat', none of which appear at all on the VM.

I'm afraid I don't have more specific information about the virtualisation process, as it was carried out by a third party, but I believe it was transferred using the proper VMware tools for the process. I can't say whether the alfresco processes were running or stopped during the VM transfer.

The data appears to be there and intact (complete dir.root (alf_data) directory). We were wondering if we could install from scratch again and then somehow configure this to point at the old installation data and Users information, along the lines of the Backing up / restoring for migration method as appears in the Alfresco Wiki. Apologies for being so vague, as I have no background in database administration at all, but can try and supply as much further information as I can, if required.

Thanks.

We have worked around this problem by completely reinstalling Alfresco from scratch and uploading and recreating all the documents, Users and groups. We could find no way of retrieving any data from the original installation.
