add a link to document file

how can i add a link to a document file for example in another space without copy the document to this space?
i want to create a sort of preferred documents space

click on "Copy" of file/content
navigate to required destination folder/space
Go to Navigator panel
Click on "shelf"
Click on icon "Paste as link"

I followed the above process,i was able o create a link,but that link im unable to view it in the left pane ie., i can able to view it only int he right pane.
That link im unable to access through FTP also,any solution for these.
