I have installed the latest version 2.9B, configured for AD authentication, AD Import, SQL Server backend. It took hours and hours to get the configuration to work, and this msg was the final solution:
I can login with my AD administrator, and get full access to the system, i can see the users and groups imported, and everything seems good, no errors being thrown. I can login with other AD users as well. After i restart the application, i can still login with these accounts, but my same administrator account only has normal user access, and i get Access Denied errors all over the place somewhat randomly.
One example is if i login with the domain administrator account (it only gets user access), then if i click the User Profile button at the top of the screen, it usually opens User Profile and Settings with no problems, if i click User Profile again, I get an access denied error at the top of the screen: __________________________________________________ Please correct the errors below then click OK.

Sometimes clicking user profile again loads the page appropriately. I also get a similar message if i click the My Home link, this time at the bottom of the page just below the My Tasks To Do section. I get this error:

* A system error happened during the operation: Access Denied. You do not have the appropriate permissions to perform this operation. ________________
I have uninstalled and reinstalled many many times trying to get all the AD issues worked out, and SQL Server integration working.
I am running on Windows 2003 the tomcat version. I have it connected to a SQL Server 2005 db backend.
Again, it all seems to work (after initial install) until i restart the application.
I've gottent the same behavior after multiple installs.
