Version uses letters instead of numbers

Is there a way to change the labeling for updated versions of a document?

Instead of using 0.0, 0.l, 0.2, ..., 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, ...

to have it use: A.0, A.1, A.2, ..., B.0, B.1, B.2, ...

Versions in Nuxeo are stored as integers in the database.

But what you could do is define a new widget to display the version that would change the first number into a letter, so that on display things are as you expect.
