Is it possible to integrate a custom workflow engine made in Java?

Yes its possible.   However its a fairly substantial job.  

There are already two engines integrated.

I know that Alfresco uses Activiti & jBPM…
but if I've to integrate an external workflow engine, is a guideline available to follow?
