I have been playing around with this. However, there are couple of issues i'm facing after I installed this plugin. Has anyone faced similar issues? Any tips?
1. When I launch word, it takes much more time for it to open now than when alfresco word plugin was not installed.
2. When two word docs are open and i do an alt+tab to move from one doc to another, it takes some time for the focus to actually shift to the next doc. An hour glass usually comes up and i have to wait for a couple of seconds before I can actually click on the doc
3. The above problems are actually more pronounced when alfresco is not running. So the word launches the pop-up which i guess tries to connect to alfresco.
I'm using 2.1 RC, WinXP, 1.5 GB RAM, 512-1024 heap size, tomcat bundle
thanks,
/a

Hi,
Yes the add-in uses the .NET 2.0 framework which will slow down Word a little upon loading. It also uses Internet Explorer to access and display the UI.
The add-in has been designed with the Enterprise in mind - i.e. the Alfresco server will always be available. Although there are some improvements to be made to ensure this initial start-up doesn't block the main Word application, it sounds like you're probably not using it in the environment it's been designed for.
Thanks,
Mike

Yes right now i am trying it out locally. However, in an enterprise also, it is quite possible that a business user opens word without the intention of saving to alfresco.

Even now i'm using my laptop at home and believe me its a pain using word with that pop-up slowing it down. I hope you can do something about it.

The add-in has been designed with the Enterprise in mind - i.e. the Alfresco server will always be available.
Our users have laptops which they use in and out of the office. Their Word must work even when not connected to the server. They take documents with them via briefcase type functionality.
Why not implemented a check up front to see whether the servers are there. If not, the plug-in is disabled automatically and the GUI shows a warning stating so. That will satisfy all scenarios.
Just my 2 cents
Frank

Hi,
The Add-In was updated in http://issues.alfresco.com/browse/CHK-828 (12th July) to not be visible upon start-up.
Thanks,
Mike

Ah - I guess you don't have a JIRA account. We'd encourage anyone reporting bugs or suggesting new features to register with our JIRA server, so we can track these things in a formal way.
Regarding the topic - the v2.1 (final) Add-In will not try to access the Alfresco repository upon Word start-up.
Thanks,
Mike

Will try the final version of the add-in.
Thanks.
