Why is CIFS a BAD option for delivering content?

We are using a remote Alfresco CIFS mount on a Linux Environment, on which Tomcat web server is running. Tomcat serves content directly (html & images) using URLs that point to the local CIFS mount.

It has been recommended to me that this is a BAD practice.

Please help me understand why this is a bad practice, and what are the better content delivery options

CIFS is very chatty, gives bad performance in non LAN environements.
