What is Derby? Getting Error!

Hi.  For some unknown reason I am no longer able to start Alfresco.  Getting error: "Failed to start database 'alf_data/derby_data/alfresco'".  One forum member said he resolved the issue by killing certain processes.  That didn't work for me.  Does Derby have anything to do with jBPM?  What is Derby?

Answering my own question "what is Derby"…  alfresco.log states:

Alfresco is using the Apache Derby default database.
