Was to handle Microsoft Project files

Hi.
I haven't yet found a thread indicating ways of handling Microsoft Project files.  I know that I can add the files to the repository, but there is no associated file type for this document (octet/stream is assigned), therefore launching Project from the Alfresco interface doesn't seem possible to me.  I also understand that since it is an unsupported file type, no metadata can be extracted. But it would still be nice to be able to launch the application when a Project file is encountered.

Is this possible?

I believe that you answered your own question.  Since the MPP filetypes are not supported it is not possible to launch the application from Alfresco.  This is common of most (if not all) other ECM systems.  Understanding the limitations and work-a-rounds are half the battle, but this is small in comparison to some….~:}

You can add repo mimetype support for Microsoft Project files yourself by editing:
tomcat/webapps/alfresco/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco/mimetype/mimetype-map.xml

Add the following xml snippet:
<mimetype mimetype="application/vnd.ms-project" display="Microsoft Project">
   <extension>mpp</extension>
</mimetype>
Restart Alfresco (the mimetype map is cached) and uploaded .mpp files will have the correct mimetype in the repo.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks. This was the hint I was looking for.  I'll give it a try. Cheers.

Sweet! - Thanks Mike! –

That's what I am appreciating more everyday about the Open Source environments and especially Alfresco’s - having been exposed to other non-OS CMS’s in the corporate world over the years and now experiencing what I consider to be the best overall OS ECM experience yet!

My hope is to study, utilize and contribute to this cause as much as possible.  Please keep up the great work to fulfill our common dreams and passions to the greater benefit of the whole!

Sometimes mistakes can help you arrive at a solution much faster…~:}

Mike -

For clearification purposes, can you tell me what the difference is between your recommendation of adding different MIME types and what I have read in the Wiki?

http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Adding_a_Mime_Type

Especially the comment about not editing directly but rather override using an extention file.

Thanks!

Yes, the Wiki contains the "proper" way to do it…
