User permissions

Hi, does Alfresco support granular user rights, e.g. can I assign a user to edit a specific area/folder/webpage of a site instead of it being site wide?

I assume you mean in the WCM part of the app. No it does not have that feature yet, but the good news is that is currently being worked on.

It requires quite some work in the AVM layer to implement permissions (the UI is the easy bit here) - as we are looking at refactoring all permission services to be much faster (for the READ case) at the same time. I'm not sure what is going to make it into 2.2.

Good news.  Fine-grained file and folder permissions are part of Alfresco 2.2 Enterprise.  This updated Enterprise release will be available this December. 

We are very excited about this!  Also, many other solid enhancements coming as well - search in the web client in Staging and user sandboxes, a massive overhaul of deployment configuration, to support amongst other things automated preview of non-Java-based sites via remote preview servers, and more.

I was wondering if it will be in the Community version (open source) or only in Entreprise version? And by the way do you have an idea if it will be at the beginning, middle or end of December because I can't find a date on your website!

Yes it will be merged into the community version -but we are not sure on dates for the completion of this work yet - it's quite a big and exciting change!
