Use for managing training course materials

I am wondering if anyone has used Alfresco to manage web-based courseware.  The basic problem is that we would like to manage the materials at the course level not the file level.  Courses are developed in Captiva and Articulate and also often developed as linked Microsoft Office files. Often a course may have up to 100 source files.

I have several customers (a few Fortune 500) who have this type of problem and I am having difficulty finding an apporpriate solution.  Training often has limited budgets which make this problem more painful in solving.

Any advice and or direction would be very much appreciated.

How about your own content type, derived from cm:folder ? Do you management on the folder, containing all the source files etc.

That appears to be a good solution.  Would that allow me to do workflow on the folder and its content as well?  The folder would be the course name.  the content of the folder would be the course and its source materials.

Sorry for following you but I have exactly similar situation where the folder may be any kind of course  which may be some in-house courses which launch in our own launcher. Other courses may include specific package types like ims-cp (SCORM) or simple folders with html.   Each of these folders may be in MBs.  200 MB is an average size for our courses since most of them have flash simulation files.
One of our main requirement is to launch these courses in their respective launchers during review for preview and editing. Can this be done?

Also we have our content on a remote server which will be standalone. We intend to have alfresco on a separate server. Is this achievable? Webservices can make this possible as per some post. But is workflow available through web service calls?

If you use Explorer you can actually launch the course.. either via the file share (CIFS) or from within the repository.  The way I brought in courses was to zip them with the file structure intact (folders) and imported then.  This preserves the correct structure and makes them viewable.  My problem continues to be to manage then at the space (folder) level.
