Use data from one list in another List

I've seen few questions list this on the forum but they have no answers so hopefully this one will generate a response.

I have a dataList of items for storing assets.  Now I have a custom datalist that has a list constraint on the field but the number of assets is long so updating this constraint is an issues.  Is it possible to select the items from the asset data list and use them as in the constraint list for the custom data list. 

Can't seem to find any documentation about this but I have seen it in other Alfresco solutions where a list provides the content of the drop down list.

Yes, this is a great feature to have. I was trying to do the same too, but completely clueless. Any help from the forum team?
