Can you explain what you mean by "visually unique identifier"? Do you mean an icon?

I need a number that uniquely identifies the document.

Will its NodeRef work?

Gidday, I would really like to know this too.  Have a client about to install Alfresco - and big concern is that traditional EDRMS's let you insert the Document ID say in the footer of the Word Document.  Then a user can simply search on the DocID - for a single retruned result.
How could this be replicated in Alfresco?

Are you looking to extract the docId from the footer or inject a generated value into the contents of the the word document?

I want a unique ID generated by Alfresco - as a piece of metadata that is searchable.

This unique Doc ID then forms part of the file name - e.g.

#45678 - Letter to CEO - Monthly Audit.doc

This then can be used in Word by going insert Filename into the footer - and all staff know that #45678 is the Doc ID which is a unique search field.

I hope this helps.

So you could use the noderef, the docid or generate some sort of key property yourself.

You can run a rule or a policy which fires when a word document is loaded to which sets the name of your document according to your standards.
