Hi,
Thanks for the vote of confidence.
With regard to the first issue, it would be nice to have the full stack traces.
Was this an upgrade (existing data) or a completely new installation? Usually this relates to the content being configured to reside in a location different from the default that occurs during an installation. But given the first problem, I think there may be something more sinister at work.
So, please give full details and traces. If you would prefer, you could use our JIRA to raise a bug: http://www.alfresco.org/jira.

Hi,
There should be an alfresco.log file in the location that you start your Tomcat from. If you started your Tomcat from different locations, then there will be multiple of these.
Wherever you start your tomcat from initially, you should edit the post-expanded repository.properties file, which can be found in ${CATALINA_HOME}\webapps\alfresco\WEB-INF\classes\alfresco. Change the dir.root property to some permanent location. It is set as a relative path so that people can very quickly download, unzip and run (as per instructions in the README file). Stop the server and copy the alf_data contents to your new location and restart the server. Point all new upgrades to this location.
Assuming that you don't have ANY valuable data, I would recommend starting from scratch again. If you document all the steps you followed along with paths and so on, then we can accurately determine the cause of the error.
I'm sorry that I can't help more.

Caused by: org.alfresco.service.cmr.dictionary.DictionaryException: Failed to parse model
The system will not be able to do very much in this state as it cannot read the basic Alfresco model.01-09-2006 06:57 AM
