I having the same question too.
Now I have discovered, that in the ./server/default/conf/alfresco/repository.properties is an entry: dir.root=./alf_data
In the subdir ./alf_data/contentstore are all the documents.
But on my server (Suse linux) the dir.root is in /var/tmp.
The temp dir is not so good, because it can be deleted.
How can I switch alf_data from /var/tmp to another dir ?
Greetings, Rudolf.

You just have to shutdown your alfresco server, move the alf_data folder to the alternate location you choose, and modify the dir.root to the new location.
The alf_data is created in the folder from where you launch the alfresco.sh script. if you launched the script twice from two different locations, then you'll have two alf_data created on your disk. In this case, you can wipe your database, erase the alf_data folders, and begin to rebuild your repositories.
(search for "more that one root node" into the forum, you'll find some details about that)
Everything should work fine afterwards.
Laurent.

Thx, Laurent, for the tip.
I've successfully changed the alf_data location to a different dir.
At the first run I found an error in the jboss's server.log, but after changing all subdirs where alf_data resides to owner/group jboss:jboss, then it worked.
Regards, Rudolf.

Files are stored in a "physical repository" "alf_data/contentstore", with some internale hashed name.
The link between the file name and the hashed name is stored in the database.
So if you upload a pdf file, it will be stored in the contentstore folder with a unusable name "123456.bin". You won't find any *.pdf file on the disk, you'll be able to access it by using the CIFS share emulation, FTP or webdav.
