is it possible to make a space/folder and its contents invisible to searches?  So it won't be included in searches, almost like an internal search firewall?

No.   If you have permissions to read the space/file then it will show up in the search.     Can you change permissions?

You could however change your query to exclude contents based on some criteria.  You could add an aspect or set a property to your content to stop it being displayed.

permissions and user based access is probably your best bet.

Could you step back tell us why you want to be able to read documents but not be able to find them via seach?

What information are you trying to suppress?

as an example, I get searchresults from the browsebean.  If I wanted to create just a temporary space to work with the results but wouldn't want them to appear in someone's search query when I am doing this.  So i guess I would need to restrict access to certain spaces to certain user privileges.

If you created a sys:container instead of a cm:folder node, would that show up on searches?  A sys:container node doesn't show up when browsing the Alfresco Explorer.
